CPSA and CPEA Candidates may be eligible for exam part exemptions under the following conditions:

Those holding the CIA or CPA certifications are exempt from Part 1 of any of the CPSA and CPEA exams.

Those holding the CSP, CIH or CRSP certifications are exempt from Part 2 of the CPEA Health & Safety exam.

​Those holding the CHMM certification are exempt from Part 2 of the CPEA Environmental Compliance exam.

What qualification is right for you?

Are you planning to pursue a career in internal auditing but are not sure which qualification is right for you? You can start by gaining professional certification as a Certified Internal Auditor, followed by a Chartered Internal Auditor.

If you are brand new to the industry, you can start with the essentials by taking the accredited IIA Certificate in Internal Audit and Business Risk.

If you work in a field related to internal auditing, such as compliance, you could consider obtaining the IIA Certificate in Internal Audit and Business Risk.

Internal Audit Practitioner

The Internal Audit Practitioner program is designed to lend support to new internal auditors as they progress towards a professional qualification. Studying the Internal Audit Practitioner course will introduce you to the fundamentals of the International Standards and the International Professional Practices Framework.

Certified Internal Auditor

A Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) is an internationally recognized accreditation that serves as the foundation for a career within the internal audit profession. Studying the CIA will equip you with the knowledge of internal audit theory and the fundamental frameworks. This is inclusive of the International Standards, as well as the knowledge needed to perform and plan for internal audit engagement. An introduction to the concepts of internal control, governance, technology and risk will also occur.

IIA Certificate in Internal Audit and Business Risk

The IIA Certificate is a course that is practical, accredited and modular. It is tailored to your needs. If you are new to the internal audit profession, need to freshen up your skills and knowledge, or you work within a role related to internal audit, it will equip you with the foundation in the practice and principles of governance, audit, assurance and risk.

Apprenticeships in Internal Audit

An apprenticeship in internal audit is ideal for those considering a career in internal audit, those who are new to the profession or those who are currently an experienced practitioner. Internal audit apprenticeships provide excellent opportunities for both employers and practitioners looking to develop themselves or their teams.

Specialist Certifications

Specialist certifications assist in developing your skillset within a particular area of internal auditing. Specialist certifications include:

- Qualification in Internal Audit Leadership (QIAL)

- Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA)

Salary survey shows value of chartered status

According to a 2017 Internal Audit Compensation study conducted by the IIA, CIAs earn an average annual salary of $38 000 more than those without certification. The responses to the survey were US-based.
